who we are

The Food Bank Network Nigeria

Food Bank Network Nigeria Program (FBNN) is a food assistance program that supports a coalition of local food banks and trusted non-profit organizations across Nigeria. Established in 2020, the program aims to improve food access for vulnerable populations by distributing food grants and relief packages through its network of partners. To date, FBNN has empowered over 150 local food banks, pantries, and non-profit organizations, reaching more than 200,000 beneficiaries in communities throughout Nigeria.

What we do

Food Bank Network Nigeria (FBNN) is a nonprofit working to end hunger, reduce food waste, and improve nutrition outcomes across Nigeria. We provide a coordinated platform that connects food banks, community-based organizations, corporate partners, and donors to ensure food reaches the most vulnerable populations. At FBNN, we believe no one should go hungry in a country with abundant food resources. Through collaboration and shared standards, we strengthen the capacity of food banks and hunger-relief organizations to respond effectively and sustainably to food insecurity.

Our Core Values

At Food Bank Network Nigeria (FBNN), our work is guided by a strong set of values that shape every decision, partnership, and action we take. These values reflect our commitment to excellence, accountability, and human dignity.

Compassion

We believe in showing empathy and care to the vulnerable populations we serve. Our actions are driven by the urgent need to address hunger, not just as a statistic but as a human crisis.

Integrity

We uphold the highest standards of transparency, honesty, and ethical conduct in our partnerships and community engagements.

Equity

We are committed to fairness and inclusiveness, ensuring that food and financial resources are distributed based on need, without bias or discrimination.

Collaboration

We believe that solving hunger requires collective effort. We work hand-in-hand with credible beneficiary organizations, donors, volunteers, and partners to amplify impact.

Accountability

We are answerable to our donors, partners, and the communities we serve. We track our impact, report transparently, and uphold trust at all levels.

Excellence

We pursue quality in everything we do, from food distribution systems to program monitoring, striving to continually improve and innovate.

Our Culture

Our culture is rooted in service, teamwork, and shared purpose. As a network that supports frontline food banks and responds to emergencies, we foster:

  • Mission-Driven Work: Everyone at FBNN is united by a deep commitment to ending hunger and building resilient communities across Nigeria.
  • People-Centered Approach: We believe every person matters, where we prioritize the needs and dignity of those we serve and partner with.
  • Learning & Innovation: We promote a culture of continuous learning, openness to feedback, and creative problem-solving to adapt to changing needs.
  • Professionalism with Heart: While we maintain a high standard of professionalism, we never lose the human touch in how we communicate, collaborate, and serve.
  • Recognition & Growth: We celebrate individual and team achievements, provide growth opportunities, and encourage leadership at all levels.
  • Accountability: We hold ourselves accountable to the people we serve, our partners, and each other. We follow through on our commitments, use resources responsibly, and uphold transparency and integrity in all our actions. Accountability is not just a value, it’s a shared responsibility that strengthens trust across our network.

Together, our values and culture form the foundation of FBNN’s identity, guiding how we lead, support, and create impact in Nigeria’s hunger-relief ecosystem.

THE PROBLEM

Amid pressing global issues like food insecurity and hunger, there are numerous Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) committed to mitigating the plight of vulnerable households by supplying food and other care resources. In the 2023 Global Hunger Index, Nigeria ranks 109th out of the 125 countries with sufficient data to calculate 2023 GHI scores. With a score of 28.3 in the 2023 Global Hunger Index, Nigeria has a level of hunger that is categorized as ‘serious’. While these NGOs hold a pivotal position in combating food insecurity, several obstacles obstruct their capacity to effectively deliver sustenance to the needy. Notably, the decentralized structure of these organizations and various constraints such as:
- Logistics problem to serve people in remote areas and other states across the country.
- Lack of access to sufficient resources for the NGOs to achieve their goals of reaching the vulnerable and food-insecure.
- Non-profits working in silos / in isolation.
All these can hinder the efficient distribution of food to indigent households residing in low-income communities.

THE SOLUTION

Food Bank Network Nigeria is an initiative of Lagos Food Bank that supplies food to a coalition of local food bank partners and credible non-profit organizations across Nigeria. The Food Bank Network program was designed to reach more communities and beneficiaries that are outside Lagos and far-to-reach communities within Lagos environs. Our journey began in 2020, and so far, we have provided food grants and relief packages to over 150 local food banks/pantries and credible non-profit organizations who have in turn reached 200,000 beneficiaries in Lagos state and other parts of Nigeria. Since then, we've grown into a global network of change-makers, working collaboratively to foster positive change.
