The Food Bank Network Nigeria
What we do
Food Bank Network Nigeria (FBNN) is a nonprofit working to end hunger, reduce food waste, and improve nutrition outcomes across Nigeria. We provide a coordinated platform that connects food banks, community-based organizations, corporate partners, and donors to ensure food reaches the most vulnerable populations. At FBNN, we believe no one should go hungry in a country with abundant food resources. Through collaboration and shared standards, we strengthen the capacity of food banks and hunger-relief organizations to respond effectively and sustainably to food insecurity. At FBNN, we don’t just build networks; we strengthen frontline hunger solutions with the resources they need to succeed. Through collaboration, accountability, and action, we are driving a national movement to end hunger in Nigeria.
Our key areas of focus
Financial Grants
FBNN provides financial grants to registered food banks and grassroots organizations to support their hunger-relief operations, expand their reach, and improve efficiency. These grants help cover essential costs such as food procurement, logistics, and community outreach programs.
Philanthropic Support
We partner with individuals, foundations, and corporate donors to channel philanthropic resources, monetary and in-kind, towards addressing food poverty across Nigeria. Our network model ensures that support is directed to verified, impactful food banks serving the most vulnerable.
Direct Food Aid
Working with our Beneficiary organizations, we facilitate the collection, coordination, and distribution of food items to underserved communities, schools, IDP camps, and other high-need areas. We promote food rescue, aggregation, and equitable access to nutritious meals across regions.
Disaster Relief
In times of crisis, such as floods, pandemics, or economic shocks, we activate our emergency response framework to provide immediate food relief and essential supplies to affected populations. We also help food banks prepare for and respond to future emergencies through training and resource mobilization.
The Problem
Amid pressing global issues like food insecurity and hunger, there are numerous Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) committed to mitigating the plight of vulnerable households by supplying food and other care resources.
In the 2023 Global Hunger Index, Nigeria ranks 109th out of the 125 countries with sufficient data to calculate 2023 GHI scores. With a score of 28.3 in the 2023 Global Hunger Index, Nigeria has a level of hunger that is categorized as ‘serious’.
While these NGOs hold a pivotal position in combating food insecurity, several obstacles obstruct their capacity to effectively deliver sustenance to the needy. Notably, the decentralized structure of these organizations and various constraints such as:
i. Logistics problem to serve people in remote areas and other states across the country.
ii. Lack of access to sufficient resources for the NGOs to achieve their goals of reaching the vulnerable and food-insecure.
iii. Non-profits working in silos / in isolation.
All these can hinder the efficient distribution of food to indigent households residing in low-income communities.
The Solution
Food Bank Network Nigeria is an initiative of Lagos Food Bank that supplies food to a coalition of local food bank partners and credible non-profit organizations across Nigeria. The Food Bank Network program was designed to reach more communities and beneficiaries that are outside Lagos and far-to-reach communities within Lagos environs.
Our journey began in 2020, and so far, we have provided food grants and relief packages to over 150 local food banks/pantries and credible non-profit organizations who have in turn reached 200,000 beneficiaries in Lagos state and other parts of Nigeria. Since then, we've grown into a global network of change-makers, working collaboratively to foster positive change.
